Preceptorship, and managing student nurse ‘transition shock’
At Nursing Live we will be discussing how to make the transition from expert student to newly registered professional.
The move from student to fully fledged nurse is difficult, and it is estimated that more than a quarter of nurses leave their posts within three years of qualifying.
A recent Nursing Standard article has highlighted why it is so difficult, and what can be done to prevent what has been dubbed ‘transition shock’.
The piece also covers the support newly registered nurses should receive including preceptorship programmes and supernumerary status, the emotional and financial stress when starting out, and what to do if you’re not getting the help you need. RCNi Plus subscribers can read the full article on the Nursing Standard website here.
How to make the transition from expert student to newly registered professional will also be discussed at Nursing Live on Friday November 10th in a session entitled Preparing for preceptorship: making the most of the opportunity to get what you need out of it.
Hosted by Dr Jane Wray and Desiree Cox, who are leading the National Preceptorship Programme, and chaired by Jessica Sainsbury Head of Midwife and Nurse Engagement at the Florence Nightingale Foundation, this talk will focus on preparing for preceptorship.
In addition, it will explore how nurses can make the most out of the process, look at the National Preceptorship Framework, and the resources available to support staff and implement best practice.
Commenting on the session, Dr Jane Wray, Senior Clinical Nurse Advisor for the National Preceptorship Programme, said: “High quality preceptorship is essential for all new registrants. They need to feel valued and supported during the transition period, and it’s also important for patient safety and aids retention. Understanding what to expect, and how to access support during this period, helps students and new registrants to get the best possible start to their careers.”
Desiree Cox, National Preceptorship Programme Lead, added “While The National Preceptorship Framework is widely available, the accompanying level of detail is not. This will be shared in our Nursing Live Learning Lab, alongside lessons learnt from the implementation of preceptorship for students, new registrants, and supporting organisations.”
Preparing for preceptorship is part of a series of Nursing Live events called Stepping up - Newly Registered Nurses and Beyond which are aimed at student and newly registered nurses.
