What do you enjoy role most in your current and why?

This is a new role, so I am enjoying listening to the people I work with, and for. Hearing what they feel is needed and having the ability to start to make positive changes. Its such an exciting time for adult social care nursing, and I am proud to be part of changes we can make together.

Can you tell us about one of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome in your career?

One of the biggest challenges has been supporting people to see the value in all types of nursing, and all nursing qualifications. Often, we see some types, specialties or levels of qualification being held in higher or lower regard than others. We are all highly skilled, professionally registered and accountable nurses. Our differences should be seen as strengths, bringing something new and unique to the teams we work in, and should be celebrated.

What advice would you give to newly qualified nurses?

Be open minded! Go where your heart tells you to go and be brave. Try something totally new, scary, or exciting. Take the time to find your groove and passion. And ask questions… lots and lots of questions.

If you were the next health minister, what would you tackle first and why?

For me, it would be raising the profile of the context of social care nursing, and the people and carers we support. Raising the profile of all nursing roles and contexts – for example learning disabilities, mental health and complex care at home – is a priority, alongside workforce development and career pathways. We need to push forward with seeing health and social care as one entity, they are inextricably linked and work in partnership.

What are you looking forward to at Nursing Live this year?

I am really looking forward to hearing people’s stories, listening to their wants, wishes and needs.
