Professor Michael Doyle
Professor of mental health research
University of Huddersfield
Michael Doyle is professor of mental health research at the University of Huddersfield, a joint appointment with South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and an honorary clinical chair at the University of Manchester. He is a registered mental health nurse and worked in mental health services and academia for more than 35 years. Professor Doyle has provided senior level professional leadership, research management and supervision on clinical risk-related topics and psychosocial interventions in mental health and forensic services. Previously accredited by the BABCP as a CBT therapist, he worked as a nurse consultant specialising in clinical risk in forensic services.
He continues to provide training and supervision. He has provided training, consultancy, evaluation and advice to health, social care organisations and criminal justice agencies worldwide. He was awarded the Rüdiger Müller-Isberner award in 2022 by the International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services for outstanding work integrating research and practice in forensic mental health services. He is project lead for the development of the Huddersfield App for Mental Health Assessment, designed as a decision support tool for nurses assessing the mental health needs and risks for young people. He is also the primary investigator for the Reducing Illicit Drug Use Project, a three-phase initiative funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research to reduce the demand for recreational drugs in young people.
