Michelle Howarth is senior engagement fellow at Edge Hill University. She is a qualified nurse and worked in the field of adult and older people's medicine for ten years. She has since developed a specialist interest in social prescribing and the use of nature-based person-centred approaches that are used to support health and well-being. Dr Howarth is the lead for knowledge exchange in the faculty and is a trustee on the board for social farms and gardens and a trustee on the National Self-Care Forum, through which she works towards supporting innovative and creative ways to improve self-management using personalised approaches. She is a member of the National Social Prescribing Network and chairs the international Personalised Care Interprofessional Education Network, which uses research, curriculum development and placement opportunities to raise awareness of social prescribing and personalised approaches among health and social care practitioners. Dr Howarth also chairs the Greater Manchester Social Care Nursing Advisory Council, which is working to raise awareness of social care nursing.
