Julie Bilboe-Crane
Senior lecturer - nursing
University of Liverpool and Founder / CEO Mary's Place ® CIC
Julie Bilboe-Crane is founder and CEO of Mary’s Place® CIC, a non-profit organisation that supports newly registered nurses and midwives as they make the transition from student to registered professional. Her interest in transition arises from her 30+ years as a nurse and almost 20 years as a nursing lecturer. She has published and spoken at conferences about the uncomfortable feeling of being betwixt and between places (liminality) and her research suggests that lack of support during transitional periods can lead to attrition. But, she also argues that if the liminal space is acknowledged and well managed there is also potential for huge growth.
Ms Crane sadly found herself in a devastating liminal space following the unexpected death of her 22-year-old daughter, Mary-Lou, in January 2020. As part of her own healing journey, she engaged in a number of holistic therapies and practices and is now a certified mindfulness and resilience coach. She established Mary’s Place to provide support and connectedness for newly registered nurses. Mary’s Place offers an online community, coaching and well-being days.
