Liverpool John Moores University

Dean McShane is a senior lecturer in mental health at Liverpool John Moores University and a third-year PhD student studying the use of immersive technology in dementia. He is also a branch Eexecutive for the Royal College of Nursing Liverpool Branch and co-host of the Man Hug, a men’s mental health podcast.

He has worked in mental health for about 23 years, in an array of different roles. He qualified as an RMN in 2008 from the University of Chester, and started work as a child and adolescent mental health practitioner, in the specialisms of acute care and eating disorder. He then became a community practitioner in an early intervention team that specialised in the treatment of young adults experiencing their first episode of psychosis. In this role he delivered a programme of mental health promotion and awareness sessions to local schools and colleges. Following this he worked for the single point of access team completing comprehensive mental health assessments of all ages and conditions following GP referrals.

In 2015 he became a lecturer/practitioner at the University of Chester teaching the preregistration nursing course; and in 2016 he became a full-time lecturer on preregistration nursing, nursing assistant practitioner and BA in health and social care courses.

In 2019 he became a senior lecturer and deputy programme lead at Chester and became instrumental in the delivery of several successful projects. Most notably in helping to gain ‘Dementia-friendly campus’ status, which involved creating more than 3,000 ‘dementia friends’. In the same year he was shortlisted for the Nursing Times Educator of the Year award and was also presented with the Chief Nursing Officer’s Medal for Nursing Excellence.
