Professor Charlotte McArdle

Professor Charlotte McArdle is a registered nurse and the deputy chief nursing officer for quality, safety, sustainability and women’s health at NHS England.

She leads the NHS England women’s health programme, a range of safety and improvement programmes and policy areas including same-sex accommodation and care partners for patients. She also leads the nursing and midwifery professions’ response to sustainable healthcare, recognising the important role nurses and midwives can play in tackling climate change while improving patient care, and making strong links between the health of the planet and the health of the population.

In her previous role as chief nursing officer at the Department of Health for Northern Ireland, she was head of the nursing and midwifery professions, and was responsible for the professional leadership, performance and development of the professions. She also provided support to the department’s lead allied health professions officer.

Professor McArdle has extensive experience in working in government administration, leading and shaping strategic policy in partnership working, co-production, public involvement and patient experience, cancer services, intermediate and community care, global healthcare challenges, health inequity and system transformation.

Skilled in clinical leadership, nursing education, workforce planning, and with a particular focus on developing young nurses and midwives globally, she has led complex organisations and managed a wide-ranging operational portfolio.

She is a graduate of the Florence Nightingale Executive Leadership Programme and International Council of Nurses’ Global Nurse Leaders Programme. She is also a credentialed global nurse consultant with the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools.

Professor McArdle has received an honorary doctorate and is a visiting professor at Ulster University Faculty of Health Science. She is also a fellow of the Queen’s Nursing Institute, a fellow and board member of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, vice chair of the RCN Foundation and a Sigma nursing liaison officer to the United Nations.
