Cathy Winfield

Executive chief nurse
South Yorkshire ICB

Cathy Winfield is a registered nurse (adults) with an NHS career spanning 35 years. She has undertaken a number of leadership roles during that time including bringing together teams following trust mergers and leading through the pandemic. She also spent a year on a part-time secondment as chief nurse fellow to the former chief nursing officer for England Dame Ruth May.  Her role as chief nursing officer for the Integrated Care Board in South Yorkshire offers the opportunity to influence change across system and organisational boundaries to focus on the broader challenges that population health and social inequalities bring to families. As the executive lead for all age safeguarding, CHC, children and young people, SEND, maternity and women’s health it brings an opportunity to put children at the focus from birth and beyond.

Before taking up this role in May 2022, Ms Winfield spent 13 years as chief nurse at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS – a large multisite acute trust, including a children’s hosptial. She was the executive lead for safeguarding, maternity and children and young people. She is passionate about equality and leading through others and is in her second year as visiting professor at the University of Derby.

She was awarded an MBE in November 2021 for her services to nursing.

Cathy Winfield is speaking at the following session on Wednesday 23 October:

  • Demystifying strategic national and regional safeguarding arrangements for children; key messages for nursing practice
